PERSONALITY:
Jason Grace has received two distinct assessments of his personality. One is that he can seem hard to approach, like he's distant or unapproachable. He always seems to carry a burden about him; but being separated from your mother (who was going crazy) and sister at the age of two to be raised by wolves will do that to you. Follow that by growing up in Camp Jupiter (a special camp for demigods and their legacies), being trained for war and combat, and burdened with great expectations because your father is literally the king of the gods and you are just creating the formula for a kid with some issues. Jason is all too aware of the expectations placed on him and knows he has a lot to live up to. The other assessment, however, is perhaps from the person who knows him best and that is that he is far too hard on himself, but is actually a very caring and considerate person.
He is very much a natural-born leader, a trait which some might argue is inherited. All his life he's been expected to step into that role and while he may fight it at times, Jason possesses the charisma and know-how to lead any team...even when his memory is gone. While he does take charge easily, he is not overbearing about it and actually tends to be very self-critical if he does something wrong, since he believes a leader should do his best to make sure all of his followers are well taken care of and happy. Jason is a very compassionate person who puts other's needs before his own. He also has a strong sense of justice and honor, always seeking the right path even if that is not always clear. For example, even when he is told that Hera* will likely kill him because he is a son of Jupiter (Zeus)*, he goes to save her anyway because he knows that is what must be done. It should go without saying, then, that he has a strong sense of duty to back it up.
That’s not to say, however, that Jason is without fault. Unfortunately, his friends might argue otherwise as they often compare him to figures like Superman and refer to him as “the Golden Boy.” Jason has his drawbacks, they just aren’t something one might notice right away. For example, one of Jason’s biggest weaknesses is his own criticism towards himself. If he fails at a quest or doesn’t live up other others expectations of him, then he can withdraw and run over the various scenarios of how he could do better. This criticism also pairs nicely with his personal brand of self-doubt. Jason often questions his position as a leader, despite being the son of the king of the gods. Jason acts like he knows what he is doing, but more often than not on the inside he is second guessing himself and questioning if the people following him really believe in what he is doing.
Because he doesn’t want to bring these doubts and problems to others’ attention, Jason is also often slow to open up. Oh, sure, once he’ll try to get to know other people and he will fight to the end for his friends but, that doesn’t always mean they know him on a personal level. Piper didn’t even realize when his birthday was until it was mentioned off hand. Jason doesn’t let other people into his personal business very easily and it takes him awhile to reveal that side of himself to someone else. It’s also difficult for people to see past his serious side. This doesn’t pair too well with his stubborn streak, which means more often than not if Jason is hurt or scared he won’t admit to it. If I were to select a particular fatal flaw for Jason himself, it would likely be along the lines of, as TV Tropes puts it, “Chronic Hero Syndrome.” Jason does not like people being hurt or suffering from injustice. Often he feels the need to help in anyway he can, even at the cost of his own health or even if the person may not want that help. He's been known to take on bullies and knows that the quickest way to earn respect is to take on the guy who thinks he is the toughest one. Even if it isn't a fight he's likely to win.
Jason is naturally heroic and cares deeply for his friends. He's the type that will jump into a fight without thinking twice and would sacrifice his life to boot if he had to. His concern for others is often apparent and even when he suffered amnesia at the start of the series, he put his trust in others. Even if it may seem like he disagrees with a person he will rely on them to have his back because that's what being on a team means. So, until you give him every reason not to, he will trust you -- even when others may tell him otherwise. You have to basically work to get Jason Grace to not give you a chance.
Jason was raised in a very strict, military-like environment from a young age. This has rubbed off on his personality and adds to that aloof nature. People aren’t as likely to joke with him or bond with him because he takes things so seriously. Others see him as remote or inaccessible which makes it hard for people to trust him as well. Jason has to relax a LOT before he’ll try cracking jokes with a person, and even then his humor tends to run on the dry side.
Ironically enough though, Jason isn’t SUCH a stickler for the rules that he won’t try to bend them when he disagrees with them. In fact, he was actually opposed to the military-like way that the Roman camp was run and he tried to subvert a lot of the systems there. Eventually, this leads to him choosing Camp Half-Blood over his original home. However, that was it’s own conflict because it took him quite a while and a lot of internal battles to figure out just what he wanted for himself WITHOUT trying to please or disappoint others. He had trouble figuring out what he wanted for himself because he was so used to trying to not let anyone down. However, now that he HAS made his final decision and come to terms with his place at both camps Jason seems to be a lot more comfortable with himself.
*Yes, THAT Hera and THAT Zeus...the gods from Greek/Roman mythology are very real and very alive in Jason's universe. Other gods too, but Jason doesn't KNOW that part.
ABILITIES:
Jason Grace is a demigod, a child of Jupiter and a mortal woman, so that he is mortal but his godly parentage has given him special abilities that allow him to do things impossible to most humans. Demigods in his universe (including Jason himself) have your typical human weaknesses in that they are susceptible to death and old age. Jason also suffers from mild dyslexia and ADHD (a common ailment of his kind as they are hardwired for ancient Greek/Latin and have to focus in battle). It goes without saying that he can speak/read fluent Latin and knows a little ancient Greek as well. Jason recently found out that he was near-sighted and needs prescription lenses to help with his sight. He also carries a scent about him that attracts powerful monsters -- as they want nothing more than to fight and kill the children of the gods. However, he is just as vulnerable as most humans and can be injured by weapons of both mortal making and immortal (i.e. celestial bronze or imperial gold, both materials used by demigods as they contain special properties that allow them to harm monsters/giants/Titans/and gods). Jason can also not use his powers/abilities infinitely. While he may be more durable, using his abilities to a large degree or for long periods of time can be taxing on him physically. Jason has been known to even pass out after using his powers too much. Demigods have been known to have dreams or visions that have meaning or significance to their lives/the future -- though typically these are played off as messages/ways of communication from the gods themselves and will unlikely come into play in this game (unless it would be convenient).
As a demigod son of Jupiter, he was trained by the Roman wolf goddess Lupa and the Legion itself at Camp Jupiter. This has honed his supernatural battle reflexes and senses -- making him quite agile and strong in battle. He's an expert in the use of both spears and swords, but also shows some talent at hand-to-hand combat and improvised weapon combat as well. Jason has shown himself to be good at holding his own against all kinds of opponents from mortals to monsters. He works especially well in a unit thank to the Roman legionnaire training he received. Jason is good at analyzing his opponents' moves in battle, picking up on their fighting style and responding accordingly. Being raised by wolves to some degree, he understands them well and was event taught an intimidation trick by Lupa herself to help get people/opponents to back down.
While he is susceptible to injury and illness, he is considerably stronger and more durable than most mortals. He also has the ability to heal faster, though usually this is helped along by godly food like ambrosia or nectar. Even so, he has some medical experience on the field of battle, able to administer first aid to his companions in a pinch.
Most of the above are general demigod abilities, Jason's real power comes from his specific lineage as a son of Jupiter, the king of the skies. Jason holds influence over the forces of weather and can control the air around him. This grants him such abilities as flight, air blasts, solidifying air, controlling wind spirits, and seeing air-based magic in use. Jason has also been known to generate storms, powerful static shocks, and even summon bolts of lighting like his dear old dad. He is even immune to electricity. However, summoning lightning and storms is especially draining for Jason and doing so too much can make him dizzy and even pass out.
Other miscellaneous skills include assistance in flying a Greek trireme and minor skills in construction repair, as learned during quests and his time at Camp Jupiter when they had to build forts/trenches.
INVENTORY:
Imperial Gold glasses for his near-sightedness. An Imperial Gold gladius that can also change into a six-foot-long javelin (it is handy in that it can channel his lightning and is especially effective against monsters, immortals, and their descendants).
HATHAWAY.
SUITABILITY:
Jason Grace is used to the whole idea of a quest and working with a team. It's been a part of his life since day one. Jason would adapt fairly well to this aspect of it, even the magic/technology wouldn't be too weird given that his own home universe is made up of gods, magic, and monsters. Weird is just a part of that, as is helping others. Seeing as one of the most important quests/world saving missions just came to an end, it wouldn't be surprising that Jason would be willing to take on another if it meant helping more people and also getting something out of the deal for himself and his new homes. Jason might be a bit reserved about working with new people -- it took awhile to get his recently acquired friends to work together and he DID just lose a friend -- but I think in the end his need to help others and be the hero would overshadow his hesitancy. Jason is very much a team player if that wasn't obvious, so it wouldn't be difficult to stay on a team if he had said he would help. His word and making promises is pretty important to him.
INCENTIVE:
His quest to stop Gaia has just ended and Jason is in a pretty good place with both Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter being his new homes. It is likely that Jason would request for help in fulfilling his promise to "recognize all of the minor gods" in his universe. Specifically, he would want help in building a stronger bond between the two camps (after all this is the first time they've interacted in a LONG time without blood shed) as that would go a long way in helping honor the minor gods if he had a safe place for their offspring to go. This could just be as simple as easier ways to move from camp to camp (can you say instant teleportation as the camps are located in New York and California -- and getting from camp to camp likely involves fighting monsters). If he can move between the camps with ease, he can then work on building those shrines he promised in Blood of Olympus a lot more quickly. If giving him that isn't possible, then just using the funds to build the shrines would probably suffice. He DID make a promise after all.
SPECIALIZATION:
Bruiser - Perhaps the more obvious choice for Jason. He's trained in combat his whole life as both a member of the Roman Legion and as a hero at Camp Half-Blood. He's seen plenty of battles with everything from fellow demigods to monsters, giants, and even gods. He was more or less born to fight, as that is one of the main things a demigod does where Jason comes from. Even beyond physical prowess, Jason is a power house with his abilities as well: able to summon storms, lightning, and the winds. He is the son of Jupiter and that comes with a lot of weight both physically and ability-wise. Combat skills aside, Jason matches many of the personality traits as well. He's a go-to leader type and has commanded troops while also knowing how to fight and survive solo. Jason often has made tough decisions and has often been described as confident on and off the field of battle.
Negotiator - When your girlfriend can Charmspeak almost anyone, you aren't often called on to be a diplomat; however, if Jason were to have a secondary specialization it would likely be this. He was the first chosen by Juno to bridge the gap between Greek and Romans -- sent to the Greek camp to help gain their trust and understand that they could work together (without his memories, but it's important that he was the first move). Prior to that, he served as the highest ranking member of the Roman legion (praetor) and after the war with Gaia he was in the process of being made a Pontifex Maximus (a role that would give him a lot of power at Camp Jupiter and put him in charge of pleasing the gods). While he is certainly not selfish, his role as a leader and a "bridge" between cultures has proven time and again. He has probably talked his way out of confrontations with the gods as often as he has actually had to do battle. In fact his role as Pontifex originated from that promise to honor the gods and won him a reluctant ally in an otherwise impossible battle. He wouldn't understand it at first, but this role would be good for him.
